This past Saturday at LAVO super DJ Avicii celebrated his 23rd birthday. The amount of success this young man has received in a relatively short time is quite impressive. A humongous Ralph Lauren Ad featuring the DJ hung on the wall at LAVO, commemorating his recent deal with the clothing brand. After a great opening set by Cazzette an up and coming Swiss DJ duo the man himself took the tables for a short set on his birthday before returning to his table to continue celebrating with his friends.
The fact that Avicii has become a household name over the past 2 years is result of the EDM scene’s growing popularity in American pop culture. Before Avicii the only DJ to achieve similar success was Tiesto. However, Tim Bergling’s rise to fame has opened the door for a whole new group of EDM artists to achieve mainstream acceptance in America.
Further cementing his legacy Avicii will perform at Radio City Music Hall September 27th. This is the first time a DJ has ever taken the stage at this historic venue. He recently told Rolling Stone
“It’s really more of a prestigious thing for me. It’ll be cool that no other DJ has been there before which makes it even more, you know, like a fun thing to do and something that a lot of people I don’t think would have expected.”
This performance will be part of his upcoming American tour this fall that’s takes him around the country.
EDM is fast becoming today’s youth musical genre of choice. With Swedish House Mafia being able to sell out Madison Square Garden and Electric Zoo drawing over 110,000 people this past Labor Day, expect walls to continue to break down as the new generation of DJ’s grows into prominence. They will have artists like Tiesto and Avicii to thank for bringing the genre to mainstream audiences.
